Medical and Dental Clinical Research Fellowships - Applications are now closed

The 2017 Victorian Cancer Agency Funding Round is now closed

The aims of the Victorian Cancer Agency Medical and Dental Clinical Research Fellowships are to:

  • develop the future leaders of cancer research in Victoria
  • support clinical research by providing opportunities for clinicians to develop and sustain a career in cancer research, and
  • attract and/or retain the best cancer researchers with significant research potential to Victoria.

Clinical Research Fellowships are aimed at strengthening and supporting clinical cancer research. The purpose is to increase the pool of clinician researchers working directly on clinical problems. These groups can strongly influence the translation of cancer research into practice, and build local capacity in translational cancer research.

Outcomes for the 2016 Victorian Cancer Agency Clinical Research Fellowship Funding Scheme can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are you only funding 80% of a clinical research salary for Clinical Research Fellowships?
A: We expect the other 20% to come from clinical responsibilities to ensure that funding recipients are working at the interface of translational research. This is in line with NHMRC funding.

Q: I am not medically qualified. Am I eligible for a Clinical Research Fellowship?
A: The Medical Clinical Research Fellowship Scheme is only open to registered medical and dental graduates.

Q: I have previously held a VCA Clinical Research Fellowship, can I apply again?
A: Applicants are eligible for four years of funding through a VCA Clinical Research Fellowship, if you have previously held a Fellowship for two years you would be eligible to apply for a further two year Fellowship.

Q: I have a Fellowship from another funding scheme. Can I also hold a VCA Fellowship?
A: No.

Q: Can you please advise on the suitability of my project for this funding scheme? Are there any priority areas for this funding scheme?
A: The VCA is unable to discuss the suitability of a project for a funding round, the VCA can only assist applicants to determine eligibility. Please refer to the funding guidelines for any priorities the VCA has for a funding scheme.

Q: If I have previously applied for VCA funding and been unsuccessful, can I apply again?
A: Yes.

Q: Can funding be used to extend an existing project?
A: Yes, as long as the proposal fits within the grant guidelines and indicates a discrete research objective with no duplication of funding from other sources.

Q: If I have previously received funding from the VCA, can I apply again?
A: Generally yes, however restrictions apply to some types of grants. Refer to individual grant guidelines.

Q: Can I provide references for the summary of proposed research in the application form?

A: The VCA uses SmartyGrants to administer our grants. SmartyGrants is an online grant management system that provides easy-to-use online application forms, as well as report management functions for successful applicants.

Q: Will you fund research in other states?
A: We will fund collaborative research across Victoria and interstate, but the lead agency must be based in Victoria.

Q: Will the VCA own the intellectual property (IP) of findings?

Q: Will there be any feedback to the applicant following the evaluation process?
A: All applicants will be notified of whether their application was successful or not. Individual feedback can be provided verbally on request.
